In 2021, while celebrating 20 years of restoring, protecting and preserving the wild that is Zuka Private Game Reserve, Tara and Jessica created Getty Asterism.

By formalising the growing team, with their passion for the natural world and their extraordinary discoveries across the reserve, into a multifaceted ecology venture, Getty Asterism, our impact can evolve, ripple outwards and head into the future.

SAFARI

🦒Safari /səˈfɑːri/ (noun)

From the Swahili word meaning “journey”. A purposeful passage through wild places, where observation becomes understanding and every encounter deepens our connection with the natural world.

🦒Journey /ˈdʒɜːni/ (noun)

A passage from one place to another; an experience that changes the traveller.

🦒Journey of giraffes (collective noun)

As a journey of giraffes moves quietly through our Zuka landscape, the meaning of safari comes full circle🌍

OCEANS WITHOUT BORDERS

One of our earliest beneficiaries, and a longstanding commitment of Ocean Family Foundation is @oceanswithoutborders.

Across the western Indian Ocean, Oceans Without Borders works at the intersection of science, community and conservation - from the coral reefs of Mozambique, to the seagrass meadows of Tanzania, and the rich coastal ecosystems of Kenya and South Africa.

The projects within Oceans Without Borders include:

🦈 Apex Predators
🙌🏾 Community Development
🐙 Reef Diversity
🪸 Coral Reef Restoration
🎣 Fisheries & Food Security
🔊 Ocean Soundscapes
🐢 Sea Turtles
🌍 Seascape Mapping & Monitoring
💚 Terrestrial Biodiversity
🐳 Whales & Dolphins

This work is practical, visible, interconnected and effective, with partner communities, key stakeholders and school aged children who will inherit the impact of today.

Guided by Marine Programme Manager and Principal Scientist Dr Camilla Floros, Oceans Without Borders continues to help us better understand these seascapes and how we may protect them.

This work is positively safeguarding the health of our oceans, strengthening ecosystems, and supporting communities connected to these natural systems that sustain us.

OCEAN TALKS

One of our first commitments as Ocean Family Foundation was to sponsor BOAT International’s Ocean Talks and we are thrilled to have continued this partnership for nine years, bringing together the yachting industry with the world of marine conservation.

Every year our speakers transport us with the power and nuances of science and story telling. Tonight, two extraordinary, deeply experienced women - Olivia Swaak Goldman, Executive Director of Wildlife Justice Commission, and Hanli Prinsloo, South Africa’s leading freediver - took us to places both seen and unseen; they educated us, inspired us and gave us much to take home.

We have put links in our bio for you to enter their worlds and see for yourselves!🐳🐋🦈

Thank you @boatinternational for another beautiful event and, to all who attended, for your spirit of connection - until next year!🪸

INDIAN OCEAN

Since founding Zuka in 2001, we have expanded our green frontiers to become more than 10,000 hectares of protected wilderness in northern Natal, and within this process, formed a greater land assembly of 30,000 hectares called the Munywana Conservancy, which was gazetted in 2019 as a formal Protected Area.

Munywana is the name of the river that flows through our conservancy and into the UNESCO World Heritage Site, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, that wraps itself around us on our boundaries.

Looking east over these wetland systems from Zuka, approximately 26 kilometers away, we see the world’s highest vegetated sand dunes, and right there, lies the Indian Ocean.

We were drawn to this wild corner of Africa three decades ago because of the ocean.

This year, in celebrating Zuka as an integrated conservation model of 25 years, we acknowledge that every species, habitat, community and ecosystem in our midst here, is because of our proximity to the ocean, and because of its very existence.

In this week of #WorldOceansDay we are thrilled to sponsor @boatinternational #OceanTalks once again in London on 11th June 2026.

REIMAGINE

“Beyond The World We Know,
A New Relationship With Our Ocean.”

This is the theme for United Nations World Oceans Day today!

We are invited to transform our perception that the ocean is vast, distant and separate from us, to understanding that it has always flowed through us, in the air we breathe, the food we eat and the climate that makes our lives possible.

Reimagine is to move together “from PASSIVE INHERITORS of the ocean’s generosity to ACTIVE GUARDIANS of its future.” 🌍🌎🌏
